Lucy and Andrew’s Union Station wedding in DC was a reflection of the life they share together. They chose their reception venue as a nod to their first date and wanted their guests to experience what home has felt like to them since their move.
The couple met back in 2018 thanks to the modern version of dating, an app. Along with the help and encouragement of some mutual friends from North Carolina, it wasn’t long before they scheduled a coffee date at Eastern Market. Their initial coffee date turned into a stroll around the market. Which then turned into brunch, mimosas, good conversation, and plenty of laughter. They immediately clicked that day. With their penchant for enjoying their surroundings laying the groundwork for the foundation of their relationship. In the days leading up to their wedding, Lucy and Andrew expressed their love for the restaurants, shops, and experiences in their neighborhood. In fact, they invited their wedding guests to come and enjoy their new hometown with an open-door visitors policy.
The sights, sounds, and flavors of their neighborhood really shaped the wedding day experience that Lucy and Andrew set out to plan. With, one very minor exception. On the morning of their Union Station wedding in DC, it rained. About two inches of dreary East Coast rain settled down in DC that morning. But, without worry. The historic stone architecture of Union Station with it’s effortless elegance provided a stunning backdrop for me to work with Lucy and Andrew on their wedding photography experience. The ceremonial feeling of historical architecture in DC always gives way to fun when paired with the celebratory mood of a wedding.
Union Station Wedding DC
Originally opening its doors in 1907, Union Station’s exterior facade features classical architectural elements such as the Arch of Constantine. The interior is just as stunning with vaulted spaces, stone inscriptions, and Beaux-Arts-style sculptures. These beautiful details are a quintessential part of our city’s iconic history. Today; Union Station shares its Capitol Hill history with couples who are planning a wedding.
Lucy and Andrew’s dedication to planning a Union Station wedding in DC extended into the exact time of year they chose to marry. In particular, one of their early first dates was to visit the cherry blossoms in the city when they were in full bloom. The annual occurrence of the cherry blossoms douses our city in a sea of pink and white beauty. Each year, in early spring, the city becomes a leisurely destination to stop and take in the sights of the blooming trees. Lucy and Andrew wanted their wedding guests to experience the beauty of this marvel. So they planned their wedding in accordance with the timing of the cherry blossoms.
Overall, there were two big moments that Lucy and Andrew were looking forward to on their wedding day. The first was the exchange of their personal wedding vows. The second is a moment that so many of my couples hope for. It’s that time during the reception when you get to look out over a sea of guests and see everyone you love gathered in one place, celebrating.
