Struggling to decide on an outfit for you engagement session?

Once you a have decided on a time and place for your  session, the next question is figuring out what to wear for your engagement session! If you are like me, anytime I know that I am going to be spending any amount of time in front of the camera my mind immediately starts running through everything in my closet, trying to figure out what to wear- and stressing about how it will look on camera.

But there is no need to stress, we are in this together!

I am going spill all of the tips and tricks I have learned over the last five years for you- to help you find engagement session outfit that you feel confident in, looks amazing on camera- so that you will have images that you LOVE!

When deciding what to wear for your session, there is no such thing as being to dressed up- seriously! Wether you decided to go with a “date night” feel, while others choose to go with a dressy WOW

Most of my clients decide to go with a “dressed up” look for one outfit (think flow-y long skirt or dress) and then a second outfit with a more “date night” feel (think dark jeans and a nice top.)

Can’t decide between outfits, and want to go with two ‘dressed up’ looks instead? Go right ahead!

Engagement Session Outfits for Her

Do not be afraid to have some fun with your outfit! There really is no such thing as being “too dressed up” when it comes to your engagement session, Seriously! Have you thought about rocking a sophisticated gown, or tulle skirt but just felt like you had the right occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up!

Dresses and skirts look most stunning on camera because they flatter every female body, and bring a beautiful movement to images.  I recommend wearing a dress that is fitted at the waistline to showcase your figure. The skirt can either sit above the knee or be full length and flowy.

If it doesn’t have a waistline, you can always add your own by pairing it with a belt- along with heels/wedges. Heels elongate your legs, and so does a leg slit and they both photograph so well!

Neutral colored dresses alway photograph well- but do not be afraid to add in some color! Long, full-length, flow-y dresses and skirts bring extra movement and look AMAZING amazing on camera. Especially softer fabrics like chiffon or tulle that give beautiful movement in images.

Where to Shop for your Engagement Session Outfits

Below are a few tried- and-true sites where many of my brides have found outfits for their engagement sessions:

Lulus  https://www.lulus.com-
 Asos http://us.asos.com-

It can be hard to tell how a dress is going to fit you based on the website shopping online. I recommend ordering two or three options to try on. Pick the one for your session that makes you feel the most confident and return the other two! Save your self the stress of something

Remember: Wether it is something you already own or a brand new outfits- the single most important thing is that you choose an outfit that you feel CONFIDENT in!

Every woman out there- regardless of her shape- has an area of her body that she’s self-conscious about. Recognizing what area that is in advance is key to choosing an outfit that you will love. Choosing flattering silhouettes that complement your natural features is the best way to ensure you’ll love the way you look in your portraits.

Three-quarter length sleeves create an awesome slimming effect on all arms, so be on the lookout for an option with a longer length sleeve. You could also bring a cute jacket, blazer or cardigan along, too.

Quick Tip: Bring a pair of easy-to-kick-off flats to wear when moving from place to place in between photos. Your feet will thank you later!

Pairing an accessory or two with your engagement session outfit can really help bring some extra dimension to your images, and be a nice tie-in when you’re coordinating with your fiance. Belts, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings bring great visual interest, so choose one or two that don’t compete for attention.

Professional Hair and Makeup for your Engagement Session

When it is time to get ready for your session, often people spend so much time thinking about their engagement session outfit, that they overlook their hair and makeup! The day of your session, the last thing that you want to be doing is stressing out about your hair and makeup. Which is why Professional hair and makeup is on the top of most of my clients’ checklists before their session. Not only because it looks amazing on camera, but it also removes the stress of getting ready on your own.  This is the time to treat yourself!

Whether it’s lash extensions or treating yourself to a blow-out; professional hair and makeup will give you an extra boost of confidence in front of the camera, and it always photographs like a dream.

Some brides also use their engagement session as an opportunity to do a test run of their Hair and Make-up for their wedding day. They can see how it will look on camera, and make any adjustments for the wedding day.

Many of my clients feel like their professional makeup is “too much” at first since it’s more than you would wear on a normal day. Good makeup artists know how to get it all just right for the camera — and you will be so glad that you did it!

Prior to you session, do not forget to get your ring cleaned! During your session I will probably ask to get a few shots of just you brand new ring on its own, and we want it to look its best for its moment!
